Ecobuilding at YewWood
Straw Bale Octagon
This structure will become our main center building.
It is a two storey post and beam structure with straw bale
infill, interior cob and stone walls, home milled timbers,
photovoltaic and hydro powered, earthen floor, lots of solar
mass, and many unusual and progressive features.
Beginning in early spring, after we create the basic structural
matrix, there will be many opportunities for volunteer labor
to participate in the following:
Framing, flooring, plumbing, tile work, straw baling, plastering,
cob, earthen floor, 12 volt wiring, stone masonry, plastering,
and lots of finishing touches.
It seems everyone wants to join in on the straw baling, and
we plan several hands-on experiential worxiops regarding placing,
securing, shaping, plastering, and finishing straw bales.
These begin in August with a worxiop by Rob Bolman that follows
an introductory evening slide show. We will continue with
worxiops and hands-on experience until we're done, including
lots of indoor work which can continue into the rainy season.
Cob and Earthworx
There will be a three day worxiop on Cob and other
earth forms in late June. We'll be practicing with our outdoor
Kiosk, Cedarhenge, before proceeding on the interior of the
Octagon in the Fall. with an additional worxiop.
